Kansas driver’s license law puts some transgender residents in ID limbo A new Kansas law has effectively invalidated the driver’s licenses and other government-issued documents of transgender residents, leaving many in legal and personal limbo. Senate Bill 244, which went into effect immediately after the legislature overrode Gov. Laura Kelly’s veto, requires that the gender listed on a driver’s license align with the state’s binary definition of male and female. The law also directs the state registrar to “correct” birth certificates that do not match these definitions. Unlike similar restrictions in other states, Kansas’ law retroactively invalidates previously issued documents. Legal advocates warn that the law threatens the privacy and safety of transgender residents, forcing them to disclose their gender identity in situations ranging from employment applications to renting property or opening bank accounts. LAWMA ACADEMY TO HOLD ESSAY COMPETITION ON WASTE


LAWMA Academy, the educational arm of Lagos Waste Management Authority, is set to hold its second essay competition on Waste tagged: “Impacts of Waste Containerisation on Effective Waste Management".

A release issued by the Director, Public Affairs (LAWMA), Mrs. Folashade Kadiri, said the competition is aimed at promoting awareness on the recently launched "Adopt-a-Bin Programme", as well as broadening participants' knowledge in the area of waste management and environmental sustainability.

Her words: "Our portal is open for the second edition of the essay competition on Waste with the topic: “Impact of Waste Containerisation of Effective Waste Management”. This is in line with LAWMA's current initiative to promote proper waste containerisation through the Adopt-a-Bin programme launched on 23rd February, 2022. We believe that this will help to know residents’ views on waste containerisation as well as their recommendations on remodelling the programme".

Mrs. Kadiri stated further that the essay competition is open to persons from 18 - 30 years old, while the winner will receive a cash prize of ₦50,000; the first runner-up will get ₦30,000 and ₦20,000 for the second runner-up.

While advising participants to visit LAWMA's portal for guidelines, send emails to academy@lawma.gov.ng or call 08035016056/07080601020 for inquiries, the Director stated that the maximum essay length is 1500 words and must be submitted in a Word Document file with a Times New Roman font and Size 12.

“Eligibility criteria include being resident of Lagos State, accompanying the essay with the date of birth, gender, address and occupation as well as being a follower of all LAWMA's social media handles”, she added.

Recall that the first edition of the competition was conducted in August 2020, with over 250 participants.
