 Rebels to withdraw from key DR Congo town 'after US request' The M23 rebel group has said it would withdraw from the eastern DR Congo town of Uvira at the request of the US administration, which had criticised seizure of the town last week as a threat to mediation efforts. The rebels entered Uvira, on the border with Burundi, less than a week after the presidents of Congo and Rwanda met with US President Donald Trump in Washington and affirmed their commitment to a peace deal known as the Washington Accords. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Saturday that Rwanda's actions in eastern Congo violated the Washington Accords and vowed to "take action to ensure promises made to the President are kept." A report by a United Nations group of experts in July said Rwanda exercised command and control over the rebels. Fire Razes INEC Office In Zamfara State



The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, reports its office in Kauran Namoda Local Government Area, Zamfara State, has been gutted by fire.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner for Zamfara State, Professor Sa'idu Babura Ahmed, who gave the report, said the tragic incident occurred on Monday 2nd May 2022 around 11.00pm. 

A statement signed by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Barrister Festus Okoye, said no casualties were reported and critical materials such as Permanent Voters' Cards (PVCs) and registration machines for the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise stored in fireproof cabinets were also saved. 

It however noted that the building was extensively damaged including a number of fixed and movable office furniture destroyed in spite of the best efforts of the Zamfara State Fire Service and spirited efforts of good Nigerians to contain the inferno.

The statement further stressed that the Nigeria Police and the Fire Service have been notified about the incident and that they have commenced investigation to ascertain the cause of the fire and advise the Commission for further action.
