Domestic violence is evil says Women Affairs commissioner

The alleged possible homicide and gruesome story surrounding the death of late Mrs. Chidiebele Iloka, wife of Mr. Mbazulike Iloka, the suspended Transition Committee Chairman of Nnewi North Local Government Area is one that came as a shock to the general public as the story has gone viral.
Addressing newsmen in Awka on the alleged circumstances of the death, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs. Ify Obinabo expressed sadness over the ugly incident.
``This story is so unfortunate and perhaps avoidable; no amount of provocation can justify domestic violence when you can easily walk away.
``Domestic violence is evil and has been on the increase, no week goes by without one or two incidents being reported on social media.
``We sympathize with the family of the victim in this trying time even as we await the outcome of the investigation that will accompany this case.
``It is no longer news that the victim and the accused are from Anambra State.
``I can assure you that the ministry and Anambra State Government are watching closely and like you all know, Mr. Governor has taken some notable steps as expected of him on this case and we will leave no stone unturned in the quest for justice.’’
Mrs. Obinabo advised couples to always step aside in the heat of provocation and identified lack of tolerance as part of what instigated domestic violence.
She noted that part of the discussions at the ongoing August Meeting interface between the First Lady of the state, Mrs. Nonye Soludo, the ministry and various Anambra women include sensitization and reorientation of the women on matters relating to family, peace building and gender-based violence.
``Many of our women who happened to be breadwinners in their homes have seized that opportunity to look down on their husbands and see them as a weakling.
``Men are now victims of domestic violence; I have witnessed an incident here where one man was being violated by his abusive spouse.’’
Mrs Obinabo also advised the youths not to be eager to rush into marriage but always watch out for red flags while courting, noting that one can't change a spouse's negative character inside the marriage.
She noted that the institution of the Family Court recently by the ministry would fasten the judicial processes of many awaiting cases on domestic violence, sexual assault, child labour and trafficking.
