FUEL SCARCITY LOOMS IN BENUE AS TANKER DRIVERS, IPMAN SHUT NNPC DEPOT, PETROL STATIONS

Acute fuel scarcity has hit Makurdi, the Benue State capital and its environs following strike action embarked upon by Petrol Tanker Drivers of NUPENG, Apir Depot.

The PTD of NUPENG, NNPC Apir Depot are at loggerheads with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited enforcement team called “Operation White.”  The controversy has led to the boycott of NNPC Apir depot by the entire depot community.

Members of the Independent Marketers Association of Nigeria IPMAN, in the state, have also joined the strike in solidarity with drivers and shut down their filling stations in Makurdi on Friday.

The Nation investigation revealed that Petrol Tanker Drivers alleged that the NNPC enforcement team called “Operation White” are supposed to operate on the borders to know the exact number of litres of petrol taken across the borders to other neighbouring countries. But instead of monitoring at the borders, they are mounting roadblocks across the state and impounding trucks load of petrol.

A member of IPMAN and PTD who pleaded anonymity because they were not allowed to speak to the press on the matter, said fuel trucks are made to pay over N1m before they are released.

They vowed not to open their petrol stations until the matter is addressed by the NNPC Limited.

As at 5:30pm yesterday (Friday) when all independent petrol marketers shut the stations, the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) had jumped from N180 to N300 per litre.

Only NNPC Mega Station on Otukpo Road was seen open and selling petroleum products as at press time.

When The Nation called the Operation Manager of NNPC in Benue State, he said he was in a meeting with the aggrieved marketers to resolve the issues and promised to call back. He, however, never did as at the time of filing in this report.

Motorists who spoke to The Nation appealed to the NNPCL, the PTD and IPMAN to sort out their differences in the interest of the common man.
