 Russian forces to stay in Mali to fight terrorism: Kremlin The Kremlin said on Thursday that Russian forces would stay in Mali to help the country's government battle terrorists following an offensive over the weekend by Tuareg-led separatists and terrorists. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the statement after being asked by a reporter how Russia responded to a purported statement from the terrorists saying they wanted Russia to leave Mali. "Russia's presence there is, in fact, due to the need identified by the current government. Russia will continue, including in Mali, to combat extremism, terrorism and other harmful phenomena and will continue to provide assistance to the current government," said Peskov, AFP reported. The Russian Defence Ministry had claimed on Tuesday that units of its African Corps prevented an attempted coup on April 25, 2026 in Mali. Five Escape Death As Fire Razes Four Bedroom Apartment In Awka


Five people from different families, in the early hours of today escaped being burnt to death as fire razed a four-room apartment at Araba street Awka, Anambra State capital.


The incident, which started around 2 am in the morning, was suspected to have emanated from a spark from electrical connections in one of the rooms in the apartment.


Narrating the incident, an eyewitness and tenant at the Ikechukwu Anakor's compound, Mr. Ahmed Abubakar Idris; from Kogi State, said he started hearing explosion in the early hours of the day while he was still asleep, adding that aside his mobile phone, his certificates, laptop and a sophisticated (DI) machine were destroyed in the incident that defied individual efforts to extinguish it.


Contributing, son of the landlord of the compound, Mr. Agozie Anakor explained that gas cylinders in the room where the incident started helped escalate it, adding that but for individual efforts, the fire would have extended to other buildings around.


They solicited help from public-spirited individuals to help reduce attendant hardships, as properties worth millions of naira were destroyed before help could come.
