No fewer than four persons were killed during protest in Benin City, the Edo State capital on Wednesday.

A source in Benin told current matters that the protest began shortly after the State Government applied to join the Federal Government on its suit on Naira redesign at the Supreme Court.

On Friday, the Supreme Court adjourned hearing on a matter brought by three governors to stop the Federal Government from the banning the old naira notes.

Same Friday, more governors applied to the Supreme Court to join the progressive governors who dragged the Federal Government and the Central Bank of Nigeria CBN to the Apex Court to halt the naira swap policy given that poor Nigerians were affected by its negative effects.

But while more and more governors identify with the plight of Nigerians to ask for the quick intervention of the Supreme Court having exhausted their conversation on a further extension of the February 10 deadline with President Muhammadu Buhari, the governors of Edo and Bayelsa States decided to go contrary, neglecting the suffering of the masses and applied to to join the Federal Government.

This, according to sources angered the residents of Benin who took to the streets to teach the CBN and commercial banks a lesson .

The protesters were heard in trending videos asking why their government should be on the side of the Federal Government who indeed are responsible for their present situation..

In the course of the protest, guns were fired by security agencies at the CBN and other areas where the protesters attacked banks resulting in the death of four persons while several others were wounded.

Some staff of the affected banks reportedly jumped high rise fences to escape mob action.

One of the protesters who preferred unnamed vowed to take the protest to wherever Governor Godwin Obaseki may be hiding.

He said ” This our governor is bad. Look at what he has done. He thinks he can sacrifice Edo people to satisfy whatever future ambition he has? People are hungry, those with health challenges can’t meet treatment requirements, yet this man instead of joining his fellow governors to stop this wicked government,he’s supporting them to come and kill us all.But he won’t succeed.. This matter won’t end here. We will go to Government House or wherever he is hiding to tell him that he cannot take us for granted. He cannot sell the soul of the state with the blood of innocent people

” We cannot continue like this in this country. No money to buy food. ATMs not loading, banks have closed doors not attending to anyone. What do they want us to do? “.
