As IGP Reassure Continuous Capacity Building for Personnel

The Nigeria Police Force in partnership with the Police Reform and Transformation Office (PORTO) and the Supporting Police Reform Processes in Nigeria (SPRPiN) project has concluded a 2-day capacity building workshop on Tuesday 18th and Wednesday 19th April, 2023, for the newly promoted Strategic Police Managers comprising 1 Deputy Inspector General (DIG), 26 Assistant Inspector General (AIGs), and 33 Commissioners of Police from across Zonal, State Commands, and Formations of the Force at the National Institute of Police Studies, Jabi, Abuja.

The initiative which is intended to strengthen leadership and management skills that will enable these frontline officers to lead and own the ongoing reform initiative of the Force was led by the United Nations Development Programme and the Global Security Sector Reform Foundation in collaboration with PORTO, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Office of the Chief of Staff to the President.

The facilitation efforts during the retreat were led by Prof Ibrahim Gambari, Chief of Staff to the President; Mr Tunji Lardner, SSAP on Research and Strategy; IGP Dr. Solomon Arase (Rtd.), Honourable Chairman, Police Service Commission; Prof. Olu Ogunshakin, Director General of the National Institute of Police Studies; IGP Matthias Seeger, Retired Inspector-General of Police, Republic of Germany; Mr Kevin Hurley, Retired Crime Commissioner, Surrey Police, United Kingdom;  and Professor Jimam Lar, University of Jos, Plateau State.

The Inspector-General of Police while emphasizing the need for training and retraining to achieve professionalism, leadership, and salient police reforms, charged the senior police officers to put to use the skills and knowledge gained during the course of the workshop and demonstrate these lofty ideas in the course of their policing duties. The IGP equally appreciated the UNDP, PORTO, and the SPRPiN for their collaborative efforts at enshrining the Presidential Police Reform Initiative in the Nigeria Police Force as he called on other bodies and agencies to partner the Police on developing capacity for police personnel.
