 Rebels to withdraw from key DR Congo town 'after US request' The M23 rebel group has said it would withdraw from the eastern DR Congo town of Uvira at the request of the US administration, which had criticised seizure of the town last week as a threat to mediation efforts. The rebels entered Uvira, on the border with Burundi, less than a week after the presidents of Congo and Rwanda met with US President Donald Trump in Washington and affirmed their commitment to a peace deal known as the Washington Accords. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Saturday that Rwanda's actions in eastern Congo violated the Washington Accords and vowed to "take action to ensure promises made to the President are kept." A report by a United Nations group of experts in July said Rwanda exercised command and control over the rebels.  Golden Eaglets Edge Zambia To Win Opener


Nigeria has made a positive start in the Total Energies Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Algeria 2023, with a 1-0 victory over Zambia.


Favour Daniel’s second-half goal secured the victory for the Golden Eaglets, who now sit on top of Group B after their opening match.


Despite a late penalty miss by Light Eke, the Golden Eaglets managed to see off the slim advantage to move top of Group B after their opening match.


Both teams played well in the contest, with Nigeria creating more chances to score than their opponents but missing that clinical touch.


Abubakar Abdullahi thought he had scored the opener after 13 minutes but he was flagged offside, while Tochukwu Ogbabido had a rasping shot from the edge of the box go inches over.


Six minutes to the break, the Nigerians had a glorious chance when Hope Linus sent skipper Precious Williams through on goal with a brilliant through ball, but the Zambian keeper’s trailing leg deflected the ball against the upright.Three minutes on the turn Zambia were also denied by the woodwork, this time

Zambia mounted a challenge for a comeback, and they almost snatched an equalizer in added time when Marcel Zimba rolled a low cross into the area, but both Aaron Simpasa and Linecker Mbesuma couldn’t offer it a touch into an empty net.


Zambia’s next match will be a COSAFA derby against South Africa while Nigeria take on Morocco, both games set for next Wednesday.
