Local Government Commissioner Hails Gov. Soludo For Reviving School Sports Festival

The Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo has been commended for reviving the school sports festivals after 10 years of inactivity.

The Commissioner for Local Government and Town Union Affairs, Mr. Collins Nwabunwanne gave the commendation during the first 'Solution School Festival Competition', organized by the Anambra Solution Initiative at the Secretary of the State Government (SSG), Hall, Awka.

Commissioner Nwabunwanne who hailed the efforts of Gov. Soludo for championing the cause of the School Festival Competition also extolled the organizers and Students for their doggedness which made the Festival a success.

He explained that with the School Festival Competition, the change the governor is looking for has commenced, pointing out that such would attract great turnaround for the state.

While enumerating the benefits of Sports Festivals which according to him include, better performance, fitness, better social life and discipline assured of the Local Government ministry's support in ensuring that the success of the programme aimed at catching the athletes young and encouraging them to take the sports festival competition seriously is achieved.

The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Ude educated the participants on the benefits of sporting activities to the body and in the development of the Cognitive response of the brain.

In his address, Chairman, Anambra State Sports Development, Mr. Patrick Onyedum thanked the governor for approving the commencement of the Solution Sports festival for Primary and Secondary Schools in both the Public and Private sectors after more than 10 years of stoppage.

He explained that it was signed into law in 2018 by the Anambra State House of Assembly and domiciled in the office of the governor.

Mr. Onyedum added that a total of 610 schools including primary and secondary schools across the 21 local government areas of the state have enrolled to participate in the festival.

He stressed that the festival was designed to touch every community, hence the preliminary performance at the community level.

The Chairman pointed out that any school that wins at this stage would compete to represent their local government, and would in turn, compete at the senatorial district level.

Mr. Onyedum said that he was confident that at the end of the competitions, the state would raise a generation of young athletes that would win trophies for the Country at the National Youth Games Scheduled for September this year and at the National Sports Festival in Ogun State next year.

He announced that the commission has agreed with institutions of higher learning in Europe and America for the award of scholarships to talented students, esoecially those that would be discovered through these competitions around the state. (MOI).
