Flooding: Nasarawa Govt To Demolish Over 300 Illegal Structures.

Nasarawa State Government has concluded plans to commence demolition of over 300 structures constructed along water ways to check floodings.

Chief Environmental Officer of the state Alhaji Abubakar Mohammed gave this indication while briefing newsmen after the monthly environmental sanitation in Lafia the state capital.

Alhaji Abubakar Mohammed stated that the measure became imperative following the recent prediction of possible flash flooding in 25 states including Nasarawa by the Nigerian Meteorogical Agency, NiMeT

He stated that the state government had mapped out areas across the state with illegal structures including shops, business centres and residential buildings for demolition to allow seamless flow of water.

The Chief Environmental Officer pointed out that already, the state government had directed residents of flood prone areas especially Lafia, Doma, Nasarawa Toto and Awe local government areas of the state to relocate to safer grounds in compliance with the recent prediction.

" Given the way floods have ravaged some parts of Nasarawa State in the recent past, the government would continue to take necessary measures to ensure people desist from activities that are capable of blocking water ways," he said.

Meanwhile, 86 persons were prosecuted by mobile courts in different locations across the state for allegedly violating the August 2023 environmental sanitation laws.
