6th September, 2023

Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) appointed by President Bola Tinubu, is reportedly unwell and has been transported overseas for immediate medical care, according to SaharaReporters.

According to an unidentified source, Akume, who had previously served as the governor of Benue State, has been in Germany for the past five days after being flown there for medical treatment.

The source further indicates that Tinubu’s SGF, who is currently unwell, has left the country and is in Germany for immediate medical attention. He has been in the European nation for five days as of now.

His absence at the NDC graduation ceremony

It’s worth mentioning that the 69-year-old Akume has been noticeably absent from official duties lately and has been represented by other officials at various events. Most recently, on Tuesday, he was represented by Alhaji Aliyu Shinkafi, the Permanent Secretary for Special Services at the OSGF, during the graduation ceremony for participants of the National Defence College (NDC) Course 31 in Abuja.

At the event, Shinkafi spoke on behalf of Akume, delivering a lecture with the theme “Economic Growth and Regional Development: Strategic Options for Africa.” This lecture was among the scheduled activities for the graduation of the college’s Course 31 participants.

Through Shinkafi, Akume emphasized that it is crucial for both the African region and specifically Nigeria to take all necessary steps to achieve political and economic stability.

He pointed out that achieving this stability would bolster investor confidence, contributing to sustainable development across the region. Akume identified key challenges to national economic growth, including income disparity, environmental concerns, resource distribution, and susceptibility to global economic and political fluctuations.

Akume’s ministerial tenure under Buhari’s administration

From 2019 to 2023, Akume held the position of Minister of Special Duties and Inter-governmental Affairs under President Muhammadu Buhari. Prior to that, he served as a Senator for the Benue North-West Senatorial District from 2007 to 2019. Additionally, he took on the role of Minority Leader in the Senate from June 2011 until June 2015.
