Nigerian Army Major General Receives Prison Sentence For Theft

A former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian Army Properties Limited, Major General Umar Mohammed, has been handed a prison sentence. He was found guilty by a Nigerian Army Special Court-martial in Abuja for embezzling funds belonging to the organization.

The charges against General Mohammed included theft, forgery, conspiracy, theft, and unauthorized diversion of Army property, among others. The special court determined that he was guilty of 14 out of the 18 charges brought against him, which included theft and other violations against service laws.

One of the charges he was convicted of involved receiving $1.045,400 from shipping companies for using the Nigerian Army Jetty in Lagos. He was also found guilty of stealing $430.800 that was deposited into the Nigerian Army Domiciliary account in Unity Bank, Abuja, for the use of the Nigerian Army Jetty in Marina, Lagos. Additionally, he was found guilty of withdrawing and misappropriating N74 million out of N75 million meant for a Nigerian Army property in Ikoyi, Lagos.

Although General Mohammed initially pleaded not guilty to all charges, the eight-member panel, led by Maj.-Gen. James Myam, declared him guilty of 14 of the 18 charges. These charges were brought under various sections of the Criminal Code Act and the Armed Forces Act.

During the trial, the prosecution presented 24 witnesses, while the defendant called upon only two witnesses. In the judgment, the panel sentenced the convicted senior military officer to 5 years of imprisonment for certain offenses, with others carrying sentences of 7 and 2 years, to be served concurrently. Additionally, the court directed General Mohammed to reimburse specific funds to the Nigerian Army Properties Limited.

It's important to note that these sentences are subject to confirmation by the "confirming authority." Before his sentencing, General Mohammed had been held in detention at the Nigerian Army's Mogadishu cantonment facility in Abuja for over 2 years.
