BENUE TO ENGAGE 6,512 COOKS FOR SCHOOL FEEDING PROGRAMME

11th October, 2023

Over 6,512 cooks are expected to be recruited for the school feeding programme exercise in Benue State.

The State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Aondowase Kunde, revealed this on Wednesday during the training of master cooks for the national homegrown school feeding programme held in Makurdi.

Kunde stated that over 400,000 pupils from the state will benefit from the school feeding programme.

He added that all past cooks have been disengaged to allow other people to participate in the programme, just as he mentioned that the social investment programme was designed to reach all Nigerians.

He said, “I believe that the gains of this exercise will ensure the delivery of safe and healthy meals for the over 400,000 pupils benefiting from the programme in Benue State and also ensure a healthy and safe hygienic environment for our children.

“I want to charge the cooks who will be trained today to pay rapt attention to the training sessions, knowing that they will be required to cascade the training to over 6,512 of their colleagues.

“This administration conducted a review and evaluation of the National Homegrown School Feeding Programme. As part of measures to reorganise the programme, all cooks who served between 2017 and 2023 have been disengaged.

“This measure is to give other citizens the opportunity to benefit from the programme, as the social investment programmes are designed to be spread to all Nigerians, particularly the poor and vulnerable, within a specified duration of time.

“This implies that all our would-be cooks will be people who have not benefited from the programme in the past.

While stating that the recruitment of cooks was transparent, open, and handled in line with the set guidelines contained in the Operational Manual of the National Homegrown School Feeding Programme, the commissioner admonished the cooks to see the opportunities offered to them as a way to contribute to nation-building in their local communities.

Speaking earlier, the State Facilitator, Mrs. Joy A. Ijuwo, mentioned that the National Social Investment Programme was a project aimed at changing the lives of Nigerians living in extreme poverty and upgrading the living standards of children, youths, and women.
