 BENUE BOOSTS CHILD PROTECTION WITH GRADUATION OF 60 UNICEF-BACKED SOCIAL WORKERS  Benue State has taken a major step toward strengthening child protection and social welfare services with the graduation of 60 Auxiliary Social Workers (ASWs) trained to serve vulnerable children and families at the grassroots. The graduation ceremony, held on Wednesday, marked the successful completion of a programme jointly supported by the Benue State Government, the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), the Bureau of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and the Benue State Bureau for International Cooperation and Development (BICD). Onitsha Youths Hold 2023 Ofala Carnival In Grand Style

 The youths of Onitsha extraction have celebrated their 2023 Ofala carnival on October 13 in a grand style.


This carnival had for the past years been celebrated prior to Ofala festival and meant to usher in a new year in the Onitsha Ado kingdom. 


The event, which attracted youths from various villages in Onitsha showcased the rich cultural heritage of the community to the world.


The youths from the nine villages that make up the Kingdom were all dressed in different attires, representing different constituent leadership structure in Onitsha; the Obi of onitsha, the Red cap Chiefs, Agbalanze's, the Diokpas and Otu Odu group.


They were followed by the Umuada, the wives and daughters of Onitsha.


The culture of the people of Benin kingdom was showcased, including the hausa and Yorubas followed by other carnival group.


The carnival was organized by the Onitsha Youth Council (OYC) Chairman, Chief Ernest Offiah.


In his address, he said that the carnival is to showcase to the world the rich cultural heritage of Onitsha.


The Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe (AGBOGIDI), graced the occasion.


The chairman thanked the igwe for always giving the youth listening ears, and a special prayer was said for the igwe.


The Carnival Planning Committee Chairman, Onyea Ozoma said that the essence of the carnival was to create awareness of the Ofala festival and called on the youths to always identify with their culture.


The Council Chairman, Chief offiah gave an award of excellence to Dr Mich Areh (Onyea of Onitsha) for his outstanding contribution to the youths.


A youth who was among the Agbalanze's, Mr Ozomma Okagbue in an interview said that he is so happy to be a partaker in this year's celebration and prayed that the remaining events which is the Ofala and the Azu Ofala which comes on 14th and 15th October respectively will be successful.


Highpoint of the event was a royal dance while the presence of the Globacon Telecommunication was felt at the venue. (Ministry of Information)
