 Russian forces to stay in Mali to fight terrorism: Kremlin The Kremlin said on Thursday that Russian forces would stay in Mali to help the country's government battle terrorists following an offensive over the weekend by Tuareg-led separatists and terrorists. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the statement after being asked by a reporter how Russia responded to a purported statement from the terrorists saying they wanted Russia to leave Mali. "Russia's presence there is, in fact, due to the need identified by the current government. Russia will continue, including in Mali, to combat extremism, terrorism and other harmful phenomena and will continue to provide assistance to the current government," said Peskov, AFP reported. The Russian Defence Ministry had claimed on Tuesday that units of its African Corps prevented an attempted coup on April 25, 2026 in Mali.  DG NYSC ASSURES CORPS MEMBERS DEPLOYED TO BORNO OF SAFETY



The Director General, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigedeir General Yusha'u Ahmed has assured corp members posted to Borno state that their safety and security will be given priority during the one year mandatory service. 


Brigedeir General Ahmed gave the assurance during swearing-in ceremony of the Batch C Stream 1 2023 Orientation Exercise at the temporary NYSC Orientation camp in Maiduguri. 


 He said Borno is among the safest state in the county due to high presence of military and other security agencies deployed to different parts of the state. 


"Once you are posted to Borno, people will begin to be apprehensive but when you come here, the situation is different. 

Reception for corps members in Borno is very good," Ahmed said.


The Director General commended  the State Government for the quality of facilities at the temporary orientation camp, expressed confidence that the exercise will soon returned to it's permanent site. 


Borno state Governor, Babagana Zulum represented by the Head of the Civil Service, Malam Fannami announced 100 bags of 50kg rice, 100  bags of 100kg beans, fifteen Jerry Cans and ten bulls for the feeding of the corps members. 


He urged the corps members to settle down and work diligently for the people of the state.


"You must project yourself not only for national unity but also for the economic growth of the Nigerian nation," Zulum stressed. 


Borno State NYSC Coordinator, Malam Mohammed Jiya said a total of 824 corps members comprising 489 males and 335 females have been registered for the Batch C Stream 1 exercise.


He expressed hope that the orientation exercise will be successful because of the commitment shown by the corps members.
