 U.N chief Guterres calls for countries fueling Sudan's war to be held accountable United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on Wednesday for countries providing weapons to the warring parties in Sudan that are used to attack civilians to be held accountable. "What is happening in Sudan is absolutely horrible. The humanitarian situation in Sudan is devastating. The level of suffering of the Sudanese people is intolerable," Guterres told reporters ahead of the annual gathering of world leaders at the United Nations in New York next week. Sudan's war, which erupted in April 2023 following a power struggle between the military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, has displaced more than 14 million people and created one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.  Bandits abduct chief, police officers, many residents in Taraba ambush


In a tragic overnight incident, armed bandits descended on the quiet community of Pupule in Yorro Local Government Area, Taraba State, abducting a total of 16 residents, including the district head and second-class chief, Alhaji Umaru Nyala, a police inspector, and a sergeant.


The brazen attack unfolded around 2 a.m. on Tuesday, catching the unsuspecting residents of Pupule in their sleep. Among the victims were key figures in the community, including the district head and law enforcement officers.


Confirming the distressing development, SP Abdullahi Usman, the spokesperson for the Taraba Police Command, revealed that Commissioner of Police, CP Joseph Eribo, has swiftly ordered a comprehensive manhunt for the assailants with the primary objective of securing the safe rescue of the abducted individuals.


Usman shared, “The strike force and anti-kidnapping squad of the police are currently combing the bushes with local hunters and vigilantes to rescue the victims.”


He clarified that one of the kidnapped police officers was on casual leave, while the other was a resident of the affected community.


The community is now gripped with fear and anxiety as efforts intensify to locate and free the victims from the clutches of the criminals.


The incident underscores the persistent security challenges faced by certain regions, necessitating proactive measures and collaborative efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of residents in vulnerable areas.
