Representatives Call For Subsidy In Hajj Fares

House of Representatives has resolved to call on the Federal Government to provide subsidy in the Hajj fare to enable thousands of intending pilgrims from Nigeria perform the 2024 religious ritual in Saudi Arabia.

This was one of the resolutions adopted by the lawmakers in a motion sponsored by a member from Kaduna State, Alhaji Umar Shehu Ajilo during plenary session.

Alhaji Umar Shehu Ajilo, who was worried over the high cost of this year's Hajj fare amounting to five million naira said it is unsuitable and will discourage many middle and low-income intending pilgrims who have the intention of participating during the annual exercise.

He explained that considering prevailing economic reality, it has become necessary for the house  to ensure downward review the processes and procedures adopted by the National Hajj Commission to arrive at an affordable amount to the intending pilgrims.

The lawmaker also noted that Hajj as an important pillar of Islamic religion that attracts visitation to the Holy Mosques in Makkah and Madinah and other historical sites in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia deserved all kind of sacrifices from the government for more blessings to the country.

Mover of the motion however, stressed the need for interface between the house, National Hajj Commission, airline operators, Saudi Arabian government and other relevant stakeholders in the exercise to ensure they exhausted the seats during the 2024 exercise.

He appealed to Nigerians especially those who have the intention of performing the 2024 Hajj exercise not to be discouraged as the 10th house was making effort to ensure that Nigerian government listen to their plea.

Adopting the motion, the house has mandated its Committee on Muslim Pilgrimage to engage the National Hajj Commission to reassess the processes by making this year's Hajj fare more

affordable.
