Economic Hardship: Palliatives not solution, says Gov Diri

Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has underscored the need for long-term structural solutions rather than short-term palliatives to address economic hardships in the country.

Speaking during the Easter Sunday service at St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Sampou, Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area, Governor Diri emphasized the importance of implementing policies and programs aimed at sustainable empowerment rather than temporary relief measures.

In a statement, Governor Diri expressed his commitment to establishing the necessary structures and systems to tackle economic challenges effectively.

He highlighted initiatives such as the establishment of technical colleges across the state, skills acquisition programs, and infrastructure development to enhance socio-economic empowerment.

While acknowledging the role of palliatives in providing immediate assistance, Governor Diri emphasized the importance of citizen involvement in businesses and skill development programs to foster self-reliance and productivity among youths.

Governor Diri urged citizens to take advantage of government initiatives and opportunities to enhance their skills and contribute to the development of Bayelsa State. He emphasized the significance of entrepreneurship and self-empowerment in building a resilient and prosperous society.

Reflecting on the Easter celebration, Governor Diri encouraged Christians to draw lessons from the biblical narratives of betrayal and doubt, emphasizing the virtues of trust, honesty, and faithfulness as essential for building a better society.

In his sermon, Rt Rev. Funkuro Amgbare, the Bishop of Northern Izon Diocese, Anglican Communion, highlighted the transformative power of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, which brings salvation to Christians and serves as a source of hope and renewal.

Governor Diri’s remarks reflect a commitment to addressing economic challenges through sustainable strategies that prioritize empowerment and self-reliance, underscoring the importance of collective efforts in building a resilient and prosperous society.
