COMMUNITY RALLIES AROUND 81-YEAR-OLD VIETNAM VET/PIZZA DELIVERY DRIVER AFTER BEING PUNCHED IN THE FACE AND CARJACKED. (PHOTOS).

Community rallies around 81-year-old Vietnam Vet/ pizza delivery driver after being punched in the face and carjacked.

Ernie Aimone was making a pizza delivery in the Jefferson Park neighborhood in Chicago around 9 p.m. Wednesday night.

After the delivery, Ernie was crossing the street when he was sucker punched from behind. The blow automatically dropped the 81-year-old veteran.

The assailant then demanded Ernie's car keys. He commented he feared for his life and wanted to see his children again so he complied while remaining face down.

They then made off with Ernie's car and livelihood in one fell swoop. Hours after the attack, police spotted Ernie's 2015 Hyundai, Santa Fe and gave chase. Sadly, the chase ended when the suspect crashed Ernie's car, causing major damage. Police were only able to apprehend one teenage suspect after the crash.

Ernie has been delivering pizza for "Joe's on Higgins" for 40 years and is a beloved employee.  He is considered family by staff and customers alike.

Many customers request Ernie to deliver their order so they can enjoy a visit with this local icon.

When word got out about Ernie's attack and subsequent predicament, this community came out to show their support.

The Gladstone Chamber of Commerce set up a GoFundMe so those in the community could donate to help get Bernie back to work.

The GoFundMe had raised over $48,000 as of today with over 1,000 donations. We hope Ernie is back on the road soon and delivering pizzas to his loyal friends and patrons!

We can't help but to think that if these assailants had tried this 30 years ago, this brave Vietnam Vet would have sent them packing...

We are very happy you are going to be okay Ernie. Sending our best wishes to you!.
