 TEAM LAGOS EMERGES TOP AT 23RD NATIONAL SPORTS FESTIVAL SOUTH WEST ELIMINATION Lagos State athletes proved their dominance in the South West by edging out regional competitors and emerging top in the five team events contested at the elimination series qualifier for the 23rd National Sports Festival later this year in Enugu. The elimination series featured team events in volleyball, basketball, football, beach volleyball, and cricket in male and female categories. While the team clinched only the female football ticket by topping their group, they showed dominance in three other sports by winning both the male and female tickets. Team Lagos took first position in the volleyball male and female categories. The male team defeated their counterparts from Ondo in the finals by 25-18, 24-26, 25-20, and 25-20, while the female team defeated Team Oyo by 25-18, 22-25, 28-26, 16-25, and 15-8.  Saudi Arabia says no new moon sighted, declares Wednesday as Eid-el-Fitr


Authorities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on Monday said no moon crescent marking the beginning of Shawwal and the end of Ramadan has been sighted.


With this development, the Ramadan fasting will be 30 days while the Eid-el-Fitr will be celebrated on Wednesday in the Kingdom.


“The crescent moon was NOT sighted in Saudi Arabia. Therefore, Eid Al Fitr will be celebrated on Wednesday, 10th April 2024,” Haramain, a Saudi-based online resource outfit, wrote on X.


“May Allāh allow us to utilise the remaining moments of this blessed month to engage in that which pleases Him, may He accept our siyām, qiyām & a’māl & may He allow us to witness many more Ramadāns in good health. Āmīn.”


On April 7, Muhammad Abubakar, Sultan of Sokoto, asked Muslims in Nigeria to look out for the new moon of Shawwal 1445 AH on Monday.


Since March 11, Muslims across the world have abstained from eating, drinking, and any form of sexual relationship from dawn till dusk to observe Ramadan fasting which is either 29 or 30 days.


This development comes a day after the federal government announced Tuesday and Wednesday as public holidays.
