 Republic of Congo holds presidential election, internet disruption reported Internet connectivity across the Republic of Congo was disrupted on Sunday as voters cast ballots in a presidential election, global internet watchdog NetBlocks said. Network data indicated a nation-scale disruption to internet access, the watchdog said on X. A similar near-total nationwide internet blackout was recorded during the country’s March 2021 presidential election, lasting about three days, according to NetBlocks. Polls opened at 6 am (0500GMT) in the country’s presidential election and will remain open until 6 pm (1700GMT). More than 2.6 million registered voters aged 18 and above are eligible to cast their ballots.  Kano Assembly initiates Emirs Law amendment amidst calls for Sanusi’s reinstatement


In a significant development poised to reshape the traditional governance landscape of Kano, the state House of Assembly has embarked on a journey to amend the Kano State Emirs (Appointment and Deposition) Law.


This move follows the contentious dethronement of the 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje in 2020.


During a decisive plenary session on Tuesday, the Majority Leader, Hussien Dala, representing the Dala constituency, tabled the motion for the proposed amendments.


The decision to revisit the Emirs Law comes amidst mounting pressure for the reinstatement of Muhammad Sanusi II, whose removal sparked nationwide debate and condemnation.


Dala underscored the imperative of addressing the issues stemming from the 2019 amendment that led to the division of the historic Kano Emirate into five distinct emirates.


He emphasized the need for fairness and justice in governing traditional institutions, asserting the importance of aligning the law with principles that reflect the aspirations of the people.


The call for Sanusi’s return has resonated deeply among residents of Kano, who view him as a symbol of integrity and vision.


Mallam Ibrahim Musa, a resident, expressed optimism about the potential reinstatement, highlighting Sanusi’s positive impact on the community and the desire to rectify past injustices.


As the amendment process commences, transparency and inclusivity will be paramount.


Speaker of the House, Abdulaziz Garba Gafasa, reassured stakeholders of a fair and open legislative process, promising opportunities for public participation and input.


The unfolding amendment process holds the promise of reshaping Kano’s traditional leadership framework, with stakeholders eagerly anticipating a more equitable and respected emirate system.
