LAGOS CELEBRATES WORLD INDIGENOUS DAY
Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, joined others across the globe to commemorate World Indigenous Day with an event held at Freedom Park, Lagos, Nigeria on Friday.
The event, which includes a vibrant display of traditional music, cultural performances, and delicious local cuisine, was organised by the Ministry to promote and protect the rights of indigenous peoples in Lagos and Nigeria at large.
According to the Special Adviser on Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mr. Idris Aregbe, "World Indigenous Day is a significant occasion to recognise and celebrate the contributions of Indigenous people to our society. We are committed to promoting and protecting their rights and interests".
The attendees were treated to a colourful display of cultural performances, showcasing the rich diversity of Nigeria's and Lagos' indigenous communities. Traditional food exhibitions offered a delicious glimpse into the local cuisine, with mouth-watering dishes like Akara, Amala, jollof rice, and other varieties of local cuisines to offer.
The celebration also provided a platform for meaningful discussion, with a panel discussion delving into the challenges and opportunities facing Indigenous communities. The importance of preserving Lagos' cultural heritage and promoting its rights was highlighted.
The event showcased the traditional arts and crafts of indigenous communities, including intricate wood carvings, vibrant textiles, and beautiful pottery. It was a testament to the creativity and skill of Lagos and Nigeria's indigenous peoples.
Mr. Idris Aregbe also appreciated the entire team of the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy (LJLA) for their contribution and support in a collaborative effort to ensure the success of the event.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, Arts And Culture, Mrs. Oloruntoyin Atekoja, speaking in Yoruba, thanked all those present at the event and appreciated the Special Adviser for organising such a magnificent event to commemorate World Indigenous Day.
Emphasising the need to always celebrate our indigenous culture as Yorubas and Lagosians, Atekoja disclosed that the Ministry is coming up with more activities in the year designed to celebrate and promote the culture and language of the indigenes of Lagos State.
Dignitaries present at the event included the Chairman House Committee on Tourism, Honourable Solomon Bonu; Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr. Bolaji Ogunlende; Commissioner for Local Govt and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Bolaji Kayode Robert and the Special Adviser on E-GIS, Dr. Olajide Abiodun Babatunde, amongst others.
The event featured a Cultural Musical performance by Asa Africa, an Ile Iyan performance, a Lasuthech drama performance telling the history of Lagos, a presentation from Lagos State University Ojo, Gmlt dance group, wura samba drummers and a fashion show.
As the celebration drew to a close, members of the public were left with a deeper appreciation for the rich cultural heritage of Nigeria's indigenous communities, especially the Yoruba Culture.
