Three high-school football players have lost their lives this month during practice causing some to question coaches tactics.
15-year-old, Ovet Regalado, a sophomore at the Shawnee Mission School district in Kansas passed away at football practice on August 14th. According to reports Ovet collapsed during practice. By the time EMS arrived Ovet was in critical, life threatening condition. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but sadly he passed away.
Ovet is the third student that has passed away in just 12 days time this August.
15-year-old Javion Taylor passed away after running drills for approximately 40 minutes in Hopewell, Virginia on August 5th. Only 8 days later, on August 13th, Semaj Wilkins passed away during football practice in New Brockton, Alabama.
This is alarming to many people who point out August is the worst month for heat related illness/death. It has been said by many that coaches should be aware of each player's wellbeing and you don't just suddenly pass away from heat. There are clear symptoms and signs coaches should be looking out for. Others have gone as far as stating football practices should not be held in the August heat and if they are they should be held in the evenings and closely monitored.
Our thoughts are with the families and friends of all three of these young athletes.
