Workers in telecommunications and electricity sectors threaten to shut down over plan to arrest Ajaero

Nigerian workers in the telecommunications and electricity sectors have threatened to shut down the National grid and telecom services at midnight on Wednesday if President of Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, is arrested by the Nigeria Police Force.

The General Secretaries of the National Union of Electricity Employees and the National Union of Postal and Telecommunications Employees, Dominic Igwebike and Mary Nwosu, respectively, issued separate notices on Tuesday regarding this matter.

The police summoned Ajaero for questioning on Tuesday over alleged links to terrorism financing and other accusations in a letter on Monday. In response, Ajaero declined the late invitation but agreed to honor it on Wednesday, August 29.

In reaction to the situation, NUEE, NUPTE, and other unions have pledged to stop work if Ajaero is arrested. The NUEE, which includes workers in the Transmission Company of Nigeria, instructed its members to down tools from 12 midnight on August 29 in case of any arrest of the NLC President or any other Labour Leader. NUPTE, the workers in the postal and telecoms sector in Nigeria, followed the same instruction.

However, the NLC has vowed to initiate a nationwide strike if Ajaero is arrested.
