 Russian forces to stay in Mali to fight terrorism: Kremlin The Kremlin said on Thursday that Russian forces would stay in Mali to help the country's government battle terrorists following an offensive over the weekend by Tuareg-led separatists and terrorists. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the statement after being asked by a reporter how Russia responded to a purported statement from the terrorists saying they wanted Russia to leave Mali. "Russia's presence there is, in fact, due to the need identified by the current government. Russia will continue, including in Mali, to combat extremism, terrorism and other harmful phenomena and will continue to provide assistance to the current government," said Peskov, AFP reported. The Russian Defence Ministry had claimed on Tuesday that units of its African Corps prevented an attempted coup on April 25, 2026 in Mali.  Police, Military launch joint operation against kidnapping in Imo


The Imo State Police Command, in a joint security operation with the military, has launched a specialized squad to smash and dismantle kidnapping, armed robbery and other violent criminal syndicates in the state.


A statement by the Police Public Relations Officer,(PPRO), ASP Henry Okoye disclosed that the joint effort underscores the Command’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and security of communities in the state.


He said the operation will leverage the combined expertise and resources of both agencies to bring those responsible for the criminal activities to justice.


According to him, there were recent reports of increased kidnapping incidents in those areas which have raised significant concern among residents and students.


Okoye maintained that in responding to the development that the State Police Command has deployed a team of highly trained personnel to conduct focused operations aimed at neutralizing the threat posed by the criminal elements.


“Our objective is to enhance the peace and security of the State and to guarantee that educational institutions, including FUTO, remain safe environments for learning,” he stated.
