King Charles and Queen Camilla Arrive in Australia For Royal Tour
🇬🇧 🤝 🇦🇺
It was a pleasure to meet Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Ms Haydon, upon arrival in Sydney.
King Charles and Queen Camilla touched down in Australia today for what is both a historic and pivotal royal tour. It is the King’s first visit to any of the 14 Commonwealth realms outside of the UK since he became their head of state in 2022. As Queen Elizabeth last traveled to Australia in 2011, this will also be the first time in 13 years that the country has had its head of state on Australian soil. In addition, it is the King’s first major overseas tour since announcing his cancer dia back in February.
The King and Queen arrived at Sydney Airport at 8:30 p.m. local time on a Royal Australian Air Force plane to very wet weather. They King, 75, and Queen, 77, have arrived in the country for a historic first tour to one of the foreign realms that have Charles as monarch and head of state. Their plane touched down in rainy Sydney, at around 8:30 p.m, local time on Oct. 18.
They were welcomed for their official arrival by Australia’s governor-general Sam Mostyn, the King’s representative in the country, and her husband Simeon Beckett. They were then introduced to the country’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his partner Jodie Haydon.
. Camilla was wearing the Australian wattle brooch which was given to Queen Elizabeth during her 1954 Commonwealth tour.
After their airport arrival, the couple then headed to Admiralty House in Sydney for a short meeting with Albanese and his partner. The King and Queen will have a rest day on Saturday with the trip’s main schedule resuming on Sunday.
The couple will spend several days in Australia and then head off to Samoa for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), as Charles is head of the Commonwealth in his role as monarch.
The royal family used social media to preview the visit, with a rare personal post from the King and Queen on Instagram and X expressing their excitement. “Ahead of our first visit to Australia as King and Queen, we are really looking forward to returning to this beautiful country to celebrate the extraordinarily rich cultures and communities that make it so special. See you there!” the message read.
Another post looked back at previous trips. “The first reigning monarch to visit Australia was Queen Elizabeth in 1954,” the royal family wrote alongside an image of the young Queen and Prince Philip waving to crowds. Referring to Charles, the post continued, “The King’s own deep affection for Australia began in 1966 when, in a private capacity, he spent two terms as an exchange student at Timbertop,” which is a remote outpost in Victoria.
