This is a tragic story. A Las Vegas police officer is being investigated for taking the life of a man who called 911 while fighting off an armed intruder.
On the night of November 12th, 43-year-old Brandon Durham (pictured below) was home with his 15-year-old daughter when an armed intruder entered his home. The intruder was 31-year-old Alejandra Boudreaux a woman who Brandon had been involved with romantically in the past. She attempted to hide her identity by putting a hoodie over her face. Brandon only knew he was fighting off an armed intruder at his home when he called 911 for help.
Body cam footage shows Las Vegas PD officer, Alexander Bookman, arriving on scene and the tragic incident that follows. As officer Bookman enters the home you see Brandon Durham who is shirtless struggling with Boudreaux who was wearing a red hoodie. Brandon got the knife away from the intruder and tried to hold her in place while telling the officer that she was the intruder. He is literally screaming "help me" repeatedly.
Officer Bookman entered the home hearing the clear pleas for help from Brandon. He then sees the pair and orders the pair to drop the knife before firing his weapon a mere 2 seconds after saying the command. Brandon did not have time to follow the command. His last words were "help me". Brandon was in his own home while only wearing underwear. The intruder was dressed in obvious "intruder attire". She was wearing dark pants, a big hoodie in an attempt to cover her face as well as a dark black jacket over all of it.
Officer Bookman's first round struck Brandon Durham fatally. Brandon immediately fell on the floor. Officer Bookman then fired 5 more rounds directly at Durham. Brandon Durham was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Alejandra Boudreaux was arrested on scene and later told police she had perpetrated the home invasion with "plans of having her life taken by police". She is being charged with home invasion with a deadly weapon, assault with a deadly weapon and performing an act of willful or wanton disregard of safety, resulting in a death. Due to Brandon's minor daughter being home, Boudreaux is also charged with child abuse.
Officer Bookman is on paid leave while investigators determine whether he acted appropriately or if he should face criminal charges.
After Brandon's loved ones viewed the body cam footage they have taken to the press and expressed they fully believe the officer needs to be charged for the homicide of Brandon. By all accounts Brandon was a very nice guy who was shot and killed in his own home while trying to protect himself and his daughter.
Brandon's daughter Isabella stated, "He called police for safety but instead was brutally murdered".
One of the biggest questions is why Bookman continued to fire 5 more rounds when his first round dropped Durham and was a fatal shot.
