LASG CALLS FOR MORE WOMEN PARTICIPATION IN POLITICS

The Lagos State Government has called for more women's  participation in politics to give room for all-round development that will leave no stone unturned.

This call was made at a one-day Seminar for Women which was organised by the Women Development Centre (WDC), an agency under the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, on Thursday, at Agege. It is one of WDC's numerous training to help women become self-sufficient and skilful since 1999.

The Director of the Centre, Mrs. Olufunke Adeleye Segun, in her keynote address to the invited female political leaders from five Local Government areas in Lagos West, emphasised the need for more women in politics, as this is the sure way to an inclusive governance that Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has always clamoured for.

She said her preference for having core female grassroots politicians in attendance will further drive home her point of having women from all walks of life with their expertise vying for political positions and leadership roles that have long been male-dominated.

“We realised that women are not well represented and with regards to the THEMES Plus Agenda of Governor  Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s administration, which includes gender equality, inclusiveness in governance, prompted us to have this seminar mainly for women so that they know their importance of being in politics", she stated.

Adeleye also appreciated Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu and his Deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, for their unwavering support for the centre and women in general.

She emphasised that women in politics symbolise stability as they are agents to foster peace and development in Lagos State, saying “Training a woman equals training a nation”.

The event had in attendance a seasoned facilitator, Mr. Olufemi Tinuoye who highlighted the importance of women's participation in politics as it helps improve society at large. According to him, gender difference is not a pointer to intelligence so gender equality is an important ingredient in any successful government. He, therefore, noted that gender equality should be replicated in governance as it is being preached in another facet of life.

Honourable Queen Funmbi Akinduro, Supervisor, Women and Poverty Alleviation, Ikeja Local Government, appreciated the State Government and organisers for an insightful seminar, which has cleared her doubt and opened her mind to hopes for a better Nigeria with more women on board.

Also in attendance at the seminar were local and grassroots level women politicians and women political leaders from Ifako Ijaiye, Alimosho, Ikeja, Onigbongbo, Agege, Kosofe Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Area of the State.
