 Airtel and Google to Bring YouTube to Nigerian TVs


Airtel Nigeria has partnered with Google to make YouTube accessible on all television sets across the country, whether they are smart TVs or older, analogue models. The announcement was made on Monday, with the agreement finalized at Airtel's Lagos headquarters.


Through this collaboration, YouTube will be integrated into Airtel Nigeria’s Smart Router, a device that combines internet connectivity with the capability to turn regular TVs into smart TVs. This integration allows users to stream YouTube content directly on their TVs, offering easy access to movies, sports, music, educational videos, and more.


Femi Oshinlaja, Chief Commercial Officer at Airtel Nigeria, emphasized that this partnership will transform digital entertainment in Nigerian homes, stating, “Our goal at Airtel is to bridge the digital gap by providing affordable entertainment content.”


The Airtel Smart Router, which is priced at N25,000 and includes 30 days of unlimited data, simplifies the streaming experience, enabling families to enjoy a wide range of digital content.


Femi Adeniran, Director of Corporate Communications at Airtel, explained that this collaboration aims to enhance the customer experience, making it easier for users to access digital content at home.


Olumide Balogun, West Africa Director at Google, expressed that the partnership would help more Nigerians access their favorite YouTube videos directly on their TVs, contributing to greater digital inclusivity across Africa.


Mahesh Bhalerao, Director of EMEA Product Partnerships at YouTube, added that this collaboration highlights YouTube’s commitment to delivering high-quality content to Nigerian homes and empowering audiences to explore and enjoy diverse experiences.
