 "Just over four years ago, I failed in front of the world" – Lookman’s Emotional Speech After Winning CAF Award

Ademola Lookman, the Super Eagles winger, delivered an emotional and motivational speech after being named the 2024 CAF Men’s Player of the Year.

The 27-year-old triumphed over Achraf Hakimi, Simon Adingra, Ronwen Williams, and Serhou Guirassy to claim the prestigious award, solidifying his status as the top male footballer in Africa.

After receiving the award in Marrakech, Morocco, Lookman reflected on his journey, recalling the struggles he faced after a missed penalty for Everton in November 2020.

At the time, while playing for Fulham in the Premier League, Lookman attempted a Panenka-style penalty in stoppage time against West Ham's Lukasz Fabianski. Unfortunately, the weak effort was easily saved, leading to a 1-0 loss for Fulham. The incident sparked mockery on social media and harsh criticism from then-Fulham manager Scott Parker, who stated, “You can’t take penalties like that, and he knows that. He’s a young player, and he’s learning.”

On Monday, Lookman reflected on that moment, saying, “Just over four years ago, I failed in front of the world. Fast forward four years, and I’m the best player in Africa.”

He continued, “I want to say to the young children and people watching this: don’t let your failures weigh you down. Instead, turn your pain into power and keep fighting.”

Lookman expressed his gratitude, saying, “Firstly, I want to thank the Almighty God for everything He has done in my life and for all His blessings. I also want to thank the president, my teammates, both club and country, and everyone who has supported me with love.”

“This award is a blessing to me, my family, and my nation. Being recognized as the best player in Africa is something incredible, and I’m extremely proud.”
