Meta to end end-to-end encryption for Instagram direct messages Meta is ending end-to-end encryption for Instagram direct messages, a feature the company says will no longer be available after May 8, 2026. Unlike WhatsApp, Instagram never offered encryption to all users or as a default; only select users in certain regions could opt in on a per-chat basis. A Meta spokesperson explained that the decision comes due to low adoption. “Very few people were opting in to end-to-end encrypted messaging in DMs, so we’re removing this option from Instagram in the coming months,” the spokesperson said. “Anyone who wants to keep messaging with end-to-end encryption can easily do that on WhatsApp.” Meta’s messaging strategy has shifted multiple times over the years. WhatsApp chats have been encrypted since 2016, and the company began rolling out default encryption for Messenger in 2023. However, Meta has not clarified whether the Instagram decision affects Messenger, which is still in the proc...

LASG REAFFIRMS ZERO TOLERANCE FOR NOISE POLLUTION DURING/AFTER YULETIDE

The Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to a zero-tolerance policy on noise pollution, particularly during the Yuletide season and beyond.

Speaking at a Press Conference held on Monday at the Ministry of Environment Conference Room in Alausa, Ikeja, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab alongside the General Manager LASEPA, Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, highlighted the government’s proactive measures to curb excessive noise and safeguard public health.

Mr. Wahab acknowledged that the festive season brings heightened celebrations and activities that often lead to increased noise levels. While recognising the joy and significance of these festivities, he emphasised the need to prioritize the health and well-being of Lagos residents by reducing noise pollution.

He warned that unregulated noise poses significant health and environmental risks, which the government will not tolerate.

Wahab said that to ensure compliance with noise regulations, the government has established a Special Task Force on Noise Pollution under the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA). This Task Force, which includes members of the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LSNSC) and the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), will monitor, arrest, and prosecute violators.

The Commissioner stated that it had become a must for establishments such as worship centres, nightclubs, lounges, and bars to obtain permits from LASEPA for public events involving amplified sound. These venues are required to operate within soundproofed and enclosed spaces to protect neighbouring residents.

He noted that in January 2025, the government will launch intensified public awareness campaigns to educate residents on acceptable noise levels and the benefits of a quieter environment. He added that collaboration with stakeholders - including religious organizations, business owners, the entertainment industry, and event planners - will remain a priority.

"Plans are also in place to recognize and reward individuals and organizations that demonstrate exceptional compliance with noise regulations, fostering a culture of responsibility and sustainability", the Commissioner assured

Wahab commended Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu and his deputy, Dr. Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat, for their leadership in promoting environmental sustainability and a healthier Lagos.

He assured residents that the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources would continue to implement policies aligned with the T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Development Agenda to create a cleaner, quieter, and safer Lagos.

The Commissioner, therefore, urged Lagosians to join hands with the government in achieving a noiseless and peaceful Lagos, expressing gratitude to the press for their role in raising awareness of government initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for all residents.
