Nigeria Receives 2 Million Human Rights Violation Complaints in 2024 — NHRC

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has reported receiving two million human rights violation complaints from Nigerians in 2024. NHRC Executive Secretary, Tony Ojukwu, SAN, revealed this in an interview during a Human Rights Walk, organized in partnership with the European Union-funded International IDEA, to mark the 2024 International Human Rights Day. Ojukwu emphasized that the walk aimed to raise awareness about the rights of every Nigerian.

He highlighted that the large number of complaints reflects increased public awareness and a growing willingness to report human rights violations. He called on the government and private sector to provide more resources to support the NHRC in addressing these issues, acknowledging that funding remains a significant challenge.

Dr. Salamatu Hussein, Chairperson of the NHRC Governing Council, also underscored the importance of focusing on children’s rights, particularly the right to education, to tackle issues like Nigeria's out-of-school children crisis.
