Richard Ozobu Appointed to Lead Ohanaeze Ndigbo National Election Committee
Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the leading socio-cultural organization for the Igbo people, has appointed Prince Richard Ozobu as the head of its national election committee. This decision aims to ensure a smooth transition of leadership from Imo State to Rivers State by January 2025.
The announcement followed a key meeting held by the Ohanaeze Elders’ Council and the Concerned Statutory Imeobi Members in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, from December 17 to 18, 2024. A statement issued by Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the factional Secretary-General of Ohanaeze, emphasized the organization’s commitment to protecting and strengthening the Ndigbo Constitution.
Ozobu, a USA-trained Chartered Accountant and former Deputy Board Chairman of the now-defunct Cooperative and Commerce Bank (CCB), was chosen for his extensive experience. He has been a member of Imeobi Ohanaeze Ndigbo since 2000, which, along with his qualifications, positions him well to lead the electoral committee.
The committee will include distinguished scholars, professionals, and leaders from the seven Igbo-speaking states, such as Professor Chibuikeya Achoakawa, Professor Achi Achi, Prince Dr. Christian Dimkpa, and others.
Ohanaeze reaffirms its dedication to supporting the committee’s work and ensuring its independence from external political pressures, particularly from political elites. The goal is to establish a new National Executive Committee, with a President-General from Rivers State, while safeguarding Ohanaeze Ndigbo from political manipulation.
The organization also called on all Igbo governors to honor the original socio-cultural mandate of Ohanaeze and resist attempts to politicize the group, especially as the 2027 elections approach.
