Meta to end end-to-end encryption for Instagram direct messages Meta is ending end-to-end encryption for Instagram direct messages, a feature the company says will no longer be available after May 8, 2026. Unlike WhatsApp, Instagram never offered encryption to all users or as a default; only select users in certain regions could opt in on a per-chat basis. A Meta spokesperson explained that the decision comes due to low adoption. “Very few people were opting in to end-to-end encrypted messaging in DMs, so we’re removing this option from Instagram in the coming months,” the spokesperson said. “Anyone who wants to keep messaging with end-to-end encryption can easily do that on WhatsApp.” Meta’s messaging strategy has shifted multiple times over the years.  Taraba University Students Frustrated as ASUU Declares Indefinite Strike

Students of Taraba State University (TSU), Jalingo, have voiced their frustration over the ongoing strike declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), triggered by unresolved issues between the state government, university management, and lecturers.

The strike, which has led to the suspension of exams, has left students stranded and uncertain about when academic activities will resume. Some students were seen leaving the campus, unsure of the duration of the disruption.

Dr. Garba Joshua, Chairperson of ASUU-TSU, explained that the strike followed the expiration of a 30-day grace period given to both the state government and university management to address critical welfare concerns affecting lecturers.

“These unresolved issues include the lack of a pension scheme, unpaid salary arrears, failure to establish a Governing Council, non-payment of Earned Academic Allowances, exclusion from minimum wage implementation, and inadequate funding, as outlined in the University’s founding law,” Dr. Joshua stated.

He emphasized that despite ASUU-TSU's consistent efforts to engage with the government, the lack of action had left the union with no option but to strike in defense of its members' welfare and the integrity of higher education in Taraba State.

Students remain uncertain about when their studies will resume as the strike continues.
