 Russian forces to stay in Mali to fight terrorism: Kremlin The Kremlin said on Thursday that Russian forces would stay in Mali to help the country's government battle terrorists following an offensive over the weekend by Tuareg-led separatists and terrorists. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the statement after being asked by a reporter how Russia responded to a purported statement from the terrorists saying they wanted Russia to leave Mali. "Russia's presence there is, in fact, due to the need identified by the current government. Russia will continue, including in Mali, to combat extremism, terrorism and other harmful phenomena and will continue to provide assistance to the current government," said Peskov, AFP reported. The Russian Defence Ministry had claimed on Tuesday that units of its African Corps prevented an attempted coup on April 25, 2026 in Mali.  Edo Governor Orders Investigation into Alleged DSS Assault on Journalists


Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has ordered an investigation into the alleged assault on journalists by a Department of State Services (DSS) official during the Edo Governorship Election Tribunal proceedings at the High Court in Benin.


In a statement by the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Chairman Festus Alenkhe and Secretary Andy Egbon commended Governor Okpebholo for his swift intervention, emphasizing his commitment to safeguarding the rights and safety of media practitioners.


“We are deeply grateful to Governor Okpebholo for his prompt response, which sends a strong message that attacks on journalists will not be tolerated in Edo State,” the statement read.


The NUJ acknowledged the governor’s directive for a thorough investigation by the security agency and praised his efforts to foster a secure environment for media practice in the state.


“As the governor continues to uphold the principles of democracy and the rule of law, we pledge our support for his administration’s commitment to ensuring the safety and protection of journalists,” the NUJ stated.


The union also called on stakeholders to join the governor in promoting respect for media professionals and their fundamental rights.
