Jimmy Carter's Heroic Intervention: How He Saved Olusegun Obasanjo from Abacha's Detention

By Izon Daily

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has revealed the remarkable story of how Jimmy Carter, the late former US President, intervened to save his life during his detention under General Sanni Abacha's regime. Obasanjo paid tribute to Carter at a memorial service, describing him as a "titan and man of peace".

According to Obasanjo, Carter's efforts led to his transfer from detention to house arrest on his farm, which was a significant reprieve during a dark period. Carter was the only non-African leader to personally visit Abacha and advocate for Obasanjo's release. This courageous act was a testament to Carter's commitment to human rights and justice.

Obasanjo also shared how media mogul Ted Turner, inspired by Carter's advocacy, offered to support him and his family if they relocated abroad. This generous offer was a result of Carter's influence and compassion, which had a profound impact on Obasanjo's life ¹.

Carter's legacy as a champion of human rights and democracy is evident in his heroic intervention in Obasanjo's case. His selfless efforts continue to inspire leaders and individuals around the world.
