Brazilian prison using geese for security

Officials at a prison in Brazil have discovered that geese can provide security. The geese patrol the fenced perimeter between the prison yard and the outer walls.

Nine geese have taken up residence at a Brazilian prison to patrol a grassy strip between the inner and outer walls of the prison, acting as one of the last obstacles between hopeful escapees and their freedom.

The idea came to the guards when they were harassed and cornered by a gang of geese. They immediately recognized the animal's aggression, and combined with a struggling economic situation at the prison, decided to give it a shot.

Despite only clocking in at nine pounds, the gaggle of geese are extremely territorial and aggressive toward anyone who dares get too close. Their main tools of attack are charging nearby ne're-do-wells and their loud vocal chords which allow them to erupt in honks and screams that can quickly alert human prison guards.

"The geese are like colleagues for me," said Marcos Coronetti, a prison officer.

Although dogs offer plenty of bark and a bit more bite, the prison's director, Marcos Souza, believes they slept too much and were overall too expensive to take care of. Each cost $7,000 upfront, on top of compounding vet bills and food costs.

"The geese are happy with rice and they never get sick," Souza said.

There's another, less expected benefit of the feathered furies: they can't be bribed. Dogs famously roll over for a treat or cut of steak, and humans are susceptible to just about everything, geese "hate everyone", according to Souza.

"They have zero loyalty, even to the people who feed them every single day," he said.

Due to their uncompromising nature, the guards are able to offload the task of taking care of the geese to the prisoners. Inmates who have exhibited good behavior are allowed into the yard to complete a variety of tasks, one of which includes feeding the geese. According to the prisoners, this is one of the most terrifying tasks.

"I went inside to fix the gate once and they all came at me," said one inmate.

The gaggle isn't just useful in the daytime. Once the sun sets, the geese can show off their night vision, excellent hearing, and light sleeping.

A few other prisons have considered the security approach, and another Brazilian prison

Souza still wants to clarify that nine geese aren't the only security measure in the entire prison.

enlisted geese to alert them if packages are thrown in for the prisoners.

We’ve got guns, 7.62mm and 5.56mm rifles,” Souza said.“The geese are just, let’s say, an additional security measure.”.
