CAPACITY BUILDING: LAGOS HEALTH DISTRICT IV TRAINS HEALTH WORKERS

As part of the Lagos State Government's efforts to ensure good hygiene and prevent the spread of disease, the Lagos Health District IV has organised a two-day Training of Health Workers in all her Primary Healthcare Centres on “Infection Prevention & Control”.

The training, which was held recently at the New Height Pharmaceuticals, llupeju, was tailored to ensure strict compliance to regular hand washing techniques and the use of disinfectants by Health attendants in cleaning hospital facilities.

Some of the best hands in the medical profession were on the ground to treat sundry topics. Dr Kayode Opawoye, a Specialist in Infectious Disease and Control took participants through the days of the Ebola epidemic and COVID-19 pandemic, when everyone had to comply with the rules and ethics of good hygiene, hand washing, social distancing, spraying and fumigation of hospital facilities and the environment, to curtail the spread of the disease. Hence, the significance of good hygiene can not be overemphasised.

Opawoye also talked about the importance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), the proper way to wear face masks and use medical gloves; advising all health attendants on proper cleaning of surfaces, medical equipment, hospital bathrooms, railings etc. He also urged them to concentrate on high-touch areas in the health care zone and proper disposal of wastes with the use of disinfectants.

The Director, Quality Lead, Dr. (Mrs.) Ogunjobi also stressed the importance of good hygiene, saying, "We should all prioritise frequent hand washing before and after interacting with patients and make it a routine. Ideally under a running tap”. She emphasised the need for health workers to always have an alcohol-based hand sanitiser with them.
