IBEDC Refutes Claims of Laying Off 3,000 Workers

The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) has dismissed reports suggesting it recently terminated 3,000 employees, calling the claims inaccurate and misleading.

In a statement on Tuesday, IBEDC clarified that its total workforce is approximately 2,500, making it impossible to dismiss more workers than it employs.

“The total number of IBEDC employees is around 2,500. How could we possibly dismiss more than our total workforce?” the statement read.

The company emphasized that such large-scale layoffs would severely impact its operations and ability to serve customers. It also condemned the misinformation linking it to issues affecting another organization and its staff, urging journalists and the public to verify facts before spreading false reports.

“As a responsible corporate entity committed to ethical human resource practices, we encourage the media and the public to confirm details before publishing misleading reports,” IBEDC stated.

Meanwhile, reports had surfaced of protests organized by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in Oyo State, involving workers recruited through an outsourcing firm for IBEDC. The protesters demanded better wages, improved promotion opportunities, and claimed some of their members had been dismissed.

Labour union leaders, including the recently retired Commissioner of Police, Ayodele Sonubi, and other stakeholders, have since stepped in to address the concerns.
