Obasanjo Laments Decline in Reading Culture Among Youths

Former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed concern over the declining reading culture among Nigerian youths, warning that it could damage the country’s literary heritage.

He made this statement during his speech at the ‘Writers’ Reading’ event organized by the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) on Saturday in Abuja.

According to Obasanjo, Nigeria has a long history of producing outstanding literary writers whose works are recognized globally. Therefore, there is a need to groom young writers to bridge the gap in the literary field.

He emphasized that reading is the surest path to becoming a writer, yet many young people today avoid reading despite the ease of accessing information through the internet.

Obasanjo warned that if the situation is not addressed, it will not only affect Nigeria’s literary history but also result in future leaders who are uninformed and ineffective.
