Ramadan: NAFDAC Warns Against Chemical Ripening of Fruits

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Adamawa has cautioned fruit sellers against using chemicals for ripening and urged consumers to remain vigilant.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Yola on Thursday, NAFDAC Coordinator Gonzuk Bedima warned that calcium carbide—commonly used in welding—is often used to ripen fruits like bananas and oranges, posing serious health risks, including cancer.

He noted that NAFDAC had previously sensitized fruit sellers and would intensify awareness efforts, especially with the fasting season approaching when fruit consumption increases.

Bedima advised consumers to be cautious, explaining that chemically ripened fruits often appear ripe externally but remain unripe inside.

“If you suspect fruits have been ripened with chemicals, avoid buying them, as they are hazardous to your health,” he warned, urging the public to report such cases to NAFDAC.
