 Russian forces to stay in Mali to fight terrorism: Kremlin The Kremlin said on Thursday that Russian forces would stay in Mali to help the country's government battle terrorists following an offensive over the weekend by Tuareg-led separatists and terrorists. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the statement after being asked by a reporter how Russia responded to a purported statement from the terrorists saying they wanted Russia to leave Mali. "Russia's presence there is, in fact, due to the need identified by the current government. Russia will continue, including in Mali, to combat extremism, terrorism and other harmful phenomena and will continue to provide assistance to the current government," said Peskov, AFP reported. The Russian Defence Ministry had claimed on Tuesday that units of its African Corps prevented an attempted coup on April 25, 2026 in Mali.  Driver, Apprentice Killed as Petrol Tanker Explodes in Ibadan


A petrol tanker explosion in Ibadan, Oyo State, has claimed the lives of a driver and his apprentice.


The incident occurred early Tuesday morning near Total Filling Station, Orita Challenge, when the tanker, carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), lost control due to brake failure while navigating a roundabout. The vehicle struck a concrete barrier, overturned, and caught fire.


Confirming the incident, Oyo State Fire Service General Manager, Yemi Akinyinka, stated that the fire was reported at 5:01 a.m. Firefighters, led by ACFS Olubunmi Christy, swiftly responded and used foam chemical compounds to contain the blaze.


The charred remains of the driver and his assistant were recovered and handed over to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for transport to the hospital. Firefighters from Sumal Food Limited also assisted in extinguishing the flames, and personnel remain on-site for cooling operations to prevent reignition.
