 Russian forces to stay in Mali to fight terrorism: Kremlin The Kremlin said on Thursday that Russian forces would stay in Mali to help the country's government battle terrorists following an offensive over the weekend by Tuareg-led separatists and terrorists. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the statement after being asked by a reporter how Russia responded to a purported statement from the terrorists saying they wanted Russia to leave Mali. "Russia's presence there is, in fact, due to the need identified by the current government. Russia will continue, including in Mali, to combat extremism, terrorism and other harmful phenomena and will continue to provide assistance to the current government," said Peskov, AFP reported. The Russian Defence Ministry had claimed on Tuesday that units of its African Corps prevented an attempted coup on April 25, 2026 in Mali.  President Tinubu Flags Off Unity Torch as Ogun Prepares for National Sports Festival


His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, officially flagged off the Unity Torch movement today at a ceremony held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The event was attended by key stakeholders, including the Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, who reaffirmed the state’s readiness to host the upcoming National Sports Festival and the former governor of the state, Aremo Segun Osoba.


The Unity Torch, a symbol of peace and unity, highlights the importance of national cohesion through sports. Governor Abiodun emphasized that Ogun State is committed to delivering a world-class sporting event that will celebrate talent, promote unity, and showcase the state’s excellence.


The 22nd National Sports Festival, Gateway Games, Ogun 2024, is scheduled to take place in Abeokuta from May 16 to 30, 2025. The state government has assured athletes, officials, and sports enthusiasts of a well-organized festival that will set new benchmarks in Nigeria’s sporting history.
