 Zambia president approves law expanding parliament months before election Zambia's President Hakainde Hichilema on Thursday signed into law constitutional changes that will expand the country's parliament, Reuters reported. The changes increase the number of members of parliament to around 280 from 167 currently by creating more constituencies, reserving 40 new seats for women, youth and people with disabilities, and allowing the president to appoint 11 members instead of eight previously. Hichilema, who will run for a second presidential term in the August 2026 election, said during a signing ceremony that the changes were being made in good faith and there was adequate consultation. He previously argued that some constituencies were too big for effective service delivery and should be split into smaller ones. UNIPORT Promotes 46 Senior Lecturers to Professor and Associate Professor Ranks


The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has promoted 30 senior lecturers to the rank of professor and 16 others to associate professor.


Vice Chancellor Prof. Owunari Georgewill announced the promotions in a statement on Tuesday, noting that the academics underwent a rigorous assessment process. The promotions were approved during the university’s 187th Governing Council meeting, chaired by Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Sen. Mao Ohuabunwa.


A breakdown of the promotions shows that the Faculty of Science has seven new professors, followed by the Faculties of Social Sciences and Management Sciences with five each. The College of Health Sciences also had five, while the Faculties of Humanities, Engineering, and Pharmaceuticals had four, three, and one, respectively.


Among the 16 newly promoted associate professors, the Faculty of Engineering produced four, the Faculty of Science three, and the Faculties of Education and Humanities two each. Other faculties, including Agriculture, Social Sciences, Management Sciences, the College of Health Sciences, and the School of Science Laboratory Technology, each had one.
