Governor Bago Clarifies Dreadlocks Remark, Denies Discrimination

Niger State Governor Umaru Bago has dismissed claims that his administration is targeting people with dreadlocks, stating his earlier comments were misunderstood.

Addressing concerns over recent security measures, Bago clarified that the state’s focus is on tackling cultism, not hairstyles.

“We have no issue with dreadlocks—only with the cult activities linked to them,” he said, stressing that law-abiding citizens with dreadlocks are welcome.

He labeled the backlash as media misrepresentation, saying, “We are not driving out dreadlocks, but eliminating cultism threatening public safety.”
