Soludo Secures APGA Candidacy for Anambra Governorship, Names Ibezim as Running Mate

Governor Chukwuma Soludo has been elected as the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate for the upcoming November 8, 2025 governorship election in Anambra State. The announcement came following a decisive victory in the party’s primary election held on Saturday at Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, where Soludo ran unopposed.

The primary election saw an overwhelming show of support for the incumbent governor. Uche Nwegbo, the returning officer, announced the results: “Out of 3,260 total delegates, 3,175 were accredited. A total of 3,172 votes were cast, with four declared invalid. Governor Soludo received 3,168 yes-votes, with no votes cast against him.” Nwegbo officially declared Soludo the APGA candidate, citing compliance with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) guidelines.

In his acceptance speech, Soludo expressed gratitude for the resounding endorsement and reaffirmed his commitment to the people of Anambra and the APGA faithful. “I am humbled by this historic display of solidarity,” he said. “Anambra is APGA, and APGA is Anambra. I accept this nomination wholeheartedly and promise to continue working hard so as not to fail our party or our people.”

Soludo highlighted the progress made under his administration, noting that the state has achieved significant milestones without incurring debt. “Three years down the line, you have given us support, and that is why we’ve been able to do what people say is magical—without borrowing one Naira,” he stated. He promised that his administration was only in its “introductory stage,” with greater achievements yet to come.

The governor praised the peaceful and orderly conduct of the primary, crediting party members and INEC observers for the smooth process. “In one hour, everyone was able to cast their votes. I don’t think we’ve ever had this kind of election in Anambra,” he remarked. Soludo also acknowledged the widespread support from citizens, industry leaders, market women, and even other political parties, describing the current political consensus in the state as unprecedented.

Looking ahead to the election, Soludo set an ambitious goal. “We will not only win all 21 local governments but all 326 wards—and perhaps even every polling unit—to make a statement,” he declared, dismissing suggestions of significant opposition.

In a notable move, Soludo announced Dr. Onyeka Ibezim, his current deputy, as his running mate for the election. Referencing a 2017 lecture titled *If It Is Not Broken, Why Mend It?*, he said, “I am renominating Dr. Onyeka Ibezim as my deputy governorship candidate. The battle has only begun.”.
