 Kaduna Police Deny Alleged IED Explosion Incident That Killed Boy, Injured Six, Says It Was Caused By Locally-Made Firearm


Confusion has gripped residents of Abakpa in Kaduna North Local Government Area following an incident initially believed to be an improvised explosive device (IED) blast, which claimed the life of a 12-year-old boy and left at least six others injured.


The incident occurred around 8:00 am on Tuesday in the densely populated Josawa Road area, sparking panic as a loud explosion echoed through the neighborhood. Witnesses reported scenes of chaos, with residents fleeing in fear after the blast.


The victim, identified as Abubakar Mohammed, was a resident of the area. Several others sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.


However, in a statement released by the Kaduna State Police Command, authorities refuted claims of an IED explosion. Police spokesperson DSP Mansir Hassan stated that preliminary investigations revealed the incident was caused by the accidental discharge of a locally made firearm, commonly known as a Dane gun.


"On April 22, 2025, at about 08:30hrs, we received a distress call about a suspected explosion in Josawa Road, Abakpa," the statement read. "A team led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) from Kawo Division responded swiftly. Sadly, a 12-year-old boy, Abubakar Muhammed, was confirmed dead at the scene."


DSP Hassan added that seven others suffered varying degrees of injuries.


Senior officials, including the Commissioner of Police, the Garrison Commander, the State Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Chairman of Kaduna North Local Government, visited the site to conduct a joint assessment.


"Experts from the Police Anti-Bomb Squad have confirmed there was no explosion. Initial findings point to the discharge of a locally made gun as the cause of the incident," he said.


He noted that investigations are ongoing to uncover the full circumstances behind the tragedy.


The Police Command extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured the public that updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
