Peter Obi Demands Justice for 15-Year-Old Held Without Trial for Over Three Months

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s former presidential candidate, has called for justice in the case of 15-year-old Yusuf Alabi, who has been detained at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre for over three months without trial. Alabi, who captured national attention in 2023 after standing boldly in front of Obi’s convoy during a campaign rally in Lagos—an image that went viral as a symbol of youthful hope—remains in custody despite his first court appearance in March.

In a statement posted on his official X handle Tuesday night, Obi voiced alarm over the teenager’s prolonged detention and urged authorities to adhere to the rule of law. “I was made aware of the predicament of a young boy named Quadri Yusuf Alabi, who has been detained for over three months without trial, appeared in court for the first time in March, and still remains held in custody,” Obi wrote. He revealed that he had enlisted human rights lawyer Barrister Inibehe Effiong, who is already working to secure Alabi’s release. “I sincerely appeal to the police and other agents of the government to always operate within the law and stop weaponizing citizens, especially our youths, who need our care and love to unleash their talents,” Obi added.

Alabi’s troubles reportedly began when local youths apprehended him and handed him over to the police, accusing him of being a notorious fighter and thief. The teenager, however, insists he is innocent and claims to know his accusers, alleging they harbor a grudge against his family. According to Alabi, the animosity stems from his family’s refusal to share cash gifts he received from Obi and socialite Cubana Chief Priest following his celebrated moment at the rally. He has been charged with fighting and stealing, with his initial court appearance occurring on March 27. His next hearing is slated for April 28.

Effiong confirmed Obi’s involvement, praising the former candidate’s intervention. “I commend your interest in the case, Sir,” Effiong posted on X. “Efforts have been intensified in the last 24 hours to ensure that justice is done and that Quadri Yusuf Alabi regains his freedom soonest. I will provide an update within the coming hours.” He expressed optimism that justice would prevail, adding, “History will vindicate the just.”

The case has sparked renewed debate over the treatment of Nigeria’s youth within the justice system, with Obi’s advocacy amplifying calls for Alabi’s swift release and a fair resolution.
