A 7-year-old and 9-year-old boy were in an armed stand off with Albuquerque Police. Yes, with a firearm. This is nearly an unbelievable story!
Although this shocking and heart stopping incident occurred back in February, video of the encounter has just been released and has left viewers utterly shocked.
In the video captured by a drone, you witness the two young boys wearing Star Wars and Minecraft shirts, hiding behind an air conditioning unit as police move in. You can see the two boys passing the loaded handgun back and forth and peeping over the top of the unit to keep track of where the police are positioning around them.
Police were eventually able to surround the very young boys and fire non-lethal rounds to distract the children as they moved in to subdue them.
Unbelievably, as the police moved in, one boy points the weapon at officers and attempts to fire the weapon at police. Fortunately, the weapon malfunctioned and failed to fire or this story could have ended in tragedy.
There is no report on what led up to the stand-off, however police say they have responded to the home in reference to the two boys (and their family) no fewer than 50 times.
Thankfully, police were able to disarm the boys and no one was hurt. Albuquerque sheriff John Allen has released statements to share with the public the family has a troubled history with law enforcement.
No charges have been placed on the children or the parents however law enforcement has utilized many organizations to become part of the family's everyday lives including psychiatric help, grocery cards, and therapy.
It's hard to imagine a child that was just in kindergarten 2 years ago could do something like this. This was certainly one of the most stressful situations the police officers have been in.
The public has demanded for the children to be behind bars. However, others in the community appreciate the Sheriff's Department being proactive in this case. The Sheriff explained these children were taught how to use these firearms. He said there is so much more to this case than what happened on that scary day. He also explained how the children's brains are not fully developed and the Sheriff's Department has been doing everything in their power to make sure this family, and the children, come out of this traumatic experience much more educated while developing a relationship with not only law enforcement but also psychiatrists, fellow citizens, paramedics and children and family services.
We hope that the much-needed intervention in these children's lives makes a difference for the better.
