Chaos Erupts at Abuja Coalition Meeting as Jigawa Delegates Protest Representation

A high-profile coalition meeting organized by the National Political Consultative Group (North) at the Abuja Continental Hotel descended into chaos on Sunday when Jigawa State delegates disrupted proceedings over a dispute regarding representation. The gathering, attended by prominent political figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, was briefly halted as tensions flared.

The unrest began when former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, announced a delegate to speak on behalf of Jigawa State. This decision sparked immediate outrage among several Jigawa delegates, who stormed the stage in protest, insisting they would not be represented by the chosen individual. The confrontation escalated, prompting security personnel, including members of the Nigerian Police, the Department of State Services (DSS), and private guards, to form a protective barrier around key figures such as Atiku, Obi, and Amaechi.

Order was eventually restored when Mustapha Lamido, son of former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, and another delegate were selected to represent the state, calming the situation. The meeting, widely speculated to be part of coalition talks to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections, underscores the challenges of uniting diverse political factions.
